Southeastern Transportation Center

Who we are
The Southeastern Transportation Center (STC), a consortium of 10 universities from five states in DOT Region IV, is chartered under the theme Comprehensive Transportation Safety. The University of Tennessee, Georgia State, Georgia Tech, North Carolina A&T, North Carolina–Chapel Hill, North Carolina State, the University of Florida, the University of Kentucky, the University of South Florida and Vanderbilt comprise the STC.

What we do
The STC is dedicated to training professionals to address the transportation needs of the region and nation. Operating under the theme "comprehensive transportation safety", the center strives to enhance its reputation as a national leader in safety research and training in both highway transportation and public safety modes.

The University of Tennessee is the STC's lead institution. Dr. Stephen Richards, director of the UT Center for Transportation Research, serves as the STC's director. Dr. Richards is assisted in the management of the STC by the Center's co-director, Ms. DeAnna Flinchum.

Students
Attracting talented people into the profession is the key to ensuring safe and efficient transportation in the future. To achieve this goal, the STC recruits and sponsors outstanding individuals to pursue graduate degrees at member transportation institutions. These graduate students represent a variety of transportation-related disciplines, which are located around the region at STC universities.

The STC also supports a major undergraduate program headquartered at North Carolina A&T University. This program, which includes a large number of women and minorities, is geared to supply a pipeline of bright individuals to the STC graduate program and provide the transportation community with talented entry-level professionals.

Other Activities
Many activities support the STC's mission. The STC sponsors major research projects and a variety of technology transfer activities relating to transportation safety. In the past, research projects addressing issues ranging from school bus safety and work zone traffic control to transit security have been successfully undertaken. Future research efforts will continue to address major transportation safety concerns of the region and nation.

Technology transfer has seen marked growth in the past few years. Numerous research reports have been published and the STC has sponosored several major conferences and seminars of regional and national interest. Newsletters, press releases and research highlights allow us to continually disseminate the latest information and technology relating to transportation safety to practitioners throughout the region and nation.
